George VI, also known as Albert Frederick Arthur George, was the King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 1936 until his death in 1952. He was also the last Emperor of India from 1936 until the British Raj was dissolved in 1947 and the first Head of the Commonwealth following the London Declaration of 1949. He was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary and was not initially expected to inherit the throne. He served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during World War I and married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. He struggled with a stammer and sought speech therapy to manage it. He became King after his elder brother, Edward VIII, abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson. During World War II, George VI was seen as a symbol of British determination to win the war and his popularity soared. However, the British Empire declined after the war and Ireland, India, and Pakistan gained independence. George VI died of a coronary thrombosis in 1952 and was succeeded by his daughter, Elizabeth II.
